Improving Mental Health in Youth and Lowering Risk for Obesity Through a Digital Preventative Product...

Mental Health DisorderObesity1 more

The goal of this study is to test the feasibility and utilization of a redesigned mobile app and health coaching platform (Vira) in youth (aged 18-25 years) with elevated depressive symptoms who are overweight/obese and/or self-report parental history of overweight/obesity. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will use the Vira mobile app intervention with support from a health coach, and the other group will use the Vira mobile app intervention without coaching. Both groups will use the app for 12 weeks.

Eating Phenotypes for Childhood Obesity in the Context of Familial Obesity Risk

Obesity

Using an integrated approach, this study examines multiple eating traits concurrently under states of hunger and satiety. It examines the impact of short-term appetite and intake regulation on longer-term energy intake control and weight development in a cohort of ethnically diverse normal-weight and obese boys and girls with different familial predispositions to obesity.

RCT to Compare Orlistat and Polyglucosamine for the Management of Overweight and Obesity

OverweightObesity

This trial compares two treatment methods: Orlistat 60 mg to be taken three times daily one capsule; indicated for weight loss in overweight adults. Important is also that it is taken along with a reduced-calorie and low-fat diet. Polyglucosamine tablets to be taken two times daily two tablets, taken with the two main meals with the highest fat content, indicated for weight maintenance and weight loss.

Vitamin D Intervention in Young Adults With Severe Childhood-onset Obesity

Obesity

Obesity is associated with lower total serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (S-25OHD) concentration. However, the impact of obesity on free S-25OHD is inadequately studied. A direct assay for free 25OHD was introduced recently. The aim of the study was to evaluate differences in vitamin D metabolism between young adults with severe childhood-onset obesity and normal-weight controls. Half of the obese subjects and controls will receive placebo and the other half will receive vitamin D3 50 µg daily for 12 weeks.

Vaasa Childhood Obesity Primary Prevention Study

Childhood Obesity Pevention

This study aims to prevent childhood obesity with early life (pregnancy) intensified counselling. The recruited intervention group is pregnant mothers who are at risk to get gestational diabetes. Lifestyle intervention (nutritional and physical activity) begins during pregnancy in maternity clinics and continues in child wellfare clinics until the child is 5 years of age.

The Effect of 1 Year of Multiprofessional Therapy on Obesity

Obesity

Obese adolescents are submitted to a multiprofessional weight loss program, which is formed by doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and physiologists. The volunteers have intervention 3 times a week during one year, where they practice exercises, have nutrition and psychology counseling, and physiotherapy orientation. Once a month they have an appointment with the doctor. The hypothesis of this study is that a multiprofessional therapy is able to improve anthropometric and biochemical parameters, and also the quality of life of obese adolescents.

Healthy Futures Project: A Community Based Obesity Prevention Program

OverweightObesity

The purpose of this research is to increase community awareness about the relationship between physical activity, screen time, and nutrition and how these factors influence healthy weight management. The problem of obesity is at epidemic proportions and has become the most important public health problem confronting the United States today. Of greatest concern is the 300% increase in obesity rates among children and youth over the past twenty years. Childhood obesity is a precursor of adult obesity.

Prevention of Overweight in Infancy

ObesityGrowth1 more

Obesity is one of the biggest threats to health in the 21st century. Rapid weight gain in the first year of life tends to lead to overweight in children, which in turn leads to overweight in adults. This rapid early weight gain occurs most often at weaning when eating patterns emerge. Infant sleep problems also appear to be associated with the risk of becoming overweight, and contribute to maternal post-natal depression. We propose to undertake a 4-arm randomised controlled trial to determine whether extra education and support for families around weaning and development of early food and activity habits, with or without intervention to improve infant sleep, will decrease the current risk patterns of rapid excessive early childhood weight gain in New Zealand. This would provide strong evidence for the value of such a strategy in the long term control of the obesity epidemic and its consequent complications. This is a two-year intervention with follow-ups at 3.5, 5 and 11 years of age.

Obesity and Diabetes Prevention Through Science Enrichment

Type 2 DiabetesObesity

Type 2 diabetes and obesity in children continue to increase at alarming rates with devastating results. However, both these metabolic diseases are largely preventable through adoption of a healthy lifestyle, an understanding of what happens to food in the body, energy balance and some simple aspects of glucose regulation. Can elementary school children be taught the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent type 2 diabetes and obesity? Children need to learn this essential knowledge and practice these important health behavior skills. Elementary school may be an ideal place to master this subject that is a direct and logical extension of current health curricula including nutrition and physical activity blended with science and math.

The Colorado LEAP Study: A Socioecological Approach to Obesity Prevention in Early Childhood

Childhood Obesity

The Colorado Longitudinal Eating And Physical activity (LEAP) Study utilizes a social ecological approach to explore individual, family and environmental factors and their relationship to child weight status over a 3 year timeframe. Our primary research questions are as follows: Are behavior changes (increased willingness to try new foods and gross motor skills) from a preschool nutrition and activity program, The Food Friends®, sustained through early elementary school? Do The Food Friends® programs have an impact on reducing the percentage of children considered overweight and/or obese over a 3 year timeframe? Do food preference and gross motor performance directly affect child weight status or are they mediators to dietary intake and physical activity?
