Comparison of MAG and Fish Oil Efficacy

A potential application for unstructured monoacylglycerol (MAG) containing long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA)can be to provide essential fatty acids to humans who chronically consume lipases inhibitor such as Orlistat® for weigh lowering reasons. Indeed, it is predictable that chronic consumption of Orlistat® led to a depletion of essential fatty acids with time, therefore unstructured MAG containing LC-PUFA can be an option as a source of LC-PUFA for patients under Orlistat® treatment and hypothetically for subjects with other type of maldigestion/malabsorption. Potential applications of such concept are therefore related to disease conditions comprising low lipid digestion due to lipase activity insufficiency. In the present study, in order to see the response information for eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) delivery, EPA will be provided either as a mixture of free monoacylglycerols or as triacylglycerol (TAG). The erythrocyte and plasma fatty acid composition from subjects under Orlistat® consumption will be analyzed.

GWAS in a Small Group of Metabolically Healthy Obese White Adults

This is a GWAS pilot study that aims to identified possible candidate genes associate to obesity by exploring single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in a small group of obese , metabolically healthy white adults, matched with lean, white adults , metabolically healthy. The investigators hypothesize that the careful phenotyping of the subject sand matching with increase the power to find SNP significantly associate with obesity (as defined by BMI).

Formative Research - Developing a Family-based Obesity Prevention Intervention in the Canadian Context...

This formative research shows that parents of preschool-aged children are enthusiastic about learning general parenting skills, such as discipline strategies, but that they are less interested in information on child nutrition and physical activity needs. To capitalize on this enthusiasm, Dr. Haines developed Parents and Tots Together (PTT), an intervention that embeds strategies to improve children's nutrition and activity behaviours within an existing general skills parenting program. Results from the investigators feasibility trial with 16 Boston-area parents show that PTT is feasible for implementation and is extremely well-received by parents. Results are also encouraging with respect to changing parent feeding behaviours and children's nutrition and activity behaviours. What is not known is whether this program is feasible and contextually appropriate for Canadian families. Thus, the next step in this research program, and the overall goal of this study, is to assess Parents and Tots Together (PTT), a family-based intervention to prevent obesity among children 3 to 5 years of age, within the Canadian context. To achieve this goal, the investigators will conduct a pilot trial of the PTT program with 60 families recruited through Ontario Early Years Centres (OEYC). The investigators will randomize 30 families to the 3-month PTT intervention and 30 to a control condition. The investigators primary objective is to implement and test the feasibility and acceptability of PTT among families with preschool children so appropriate revisions can be made to adapt it to a Canadian context. The investigators secondary objective is to compare the following outcomes among intervention versus control participants: Parent weight-related behaviours (i.e., parent physical activity, intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, and television/video viewing, as well as responsiveness to child satiety cues). General parenting behaviours (i.e., use of positive discipline strategies). Child weight-related behaviours (i.e., sleep duration, physical activity, intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, television/video viewing). Nutritional risk score based on a screening tool for preschoolers. Child change in body mass index (BMI), standardized to age and gender.

Parents and Tots Together: A Family-Based Obesity Prevention Intervention

The obesity epidemic has spared no age group, including our youngest children. My and others' formative research shows that ethnically-diverse, low-income parents of young children are enthusiastic about learning general parenting skills, such as discipline strategies, but less interested in nutrition and physical activity. To capitalize on this enthusiasm, I will create and test an intervention that embeds strategies to improve child weight-related behaviors within a general skills parenting program. The overall goal of this study is to assess Parents and Tots Together (PTT), a family-based intervention to prevent obesity among children age 2 through 5 years. To achieve this goal, my colleagues and I will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) among ethnically diverse, primarily low-income families. Our specific aims are to: Determine the extent to which the intervention, compared with a control condition, results in a smaller age-associated increase in body mass index (BMI) among children after a 3- month intervention and a 9-month follow-up period (primary outcome). Determine the extent to which the intervention, compared with a control condition, results in: Improved parent general parenting behaviors, i.e., increased use of positive discipline strategies. Improved parent feeding practices, i.e., increased responsiveness to child satiety cues. Improved child weight-related behaviors, i.e., increased sleep duration and physical activity, and reduced sugar-sweetened beverage intake and television/video viewing.

A Trial to Investigate the Impact of a Low Glycemic Index (GI) Diet on Body Mass Index and Obesity...

Epidemiological studies suggest a role for a low glycemic index (GI) diet in the management of obesity and associated metabolic risks including diabetes. However, evidence from long-term, randomized controlled trials exploring the relationship between low GI diet, weight reduction and glycemia, particularly in children and adolescents, is lacking. Modern food-processing technology has produced many food products with high GI which may contribute to the burgeoning epidemic of obesity worldwide. Since dietary habits are shaped in early life, adolescence is a critical period to educate our young people to acquire a healthy eating habit to prevent obesity. The investigators hypothesized that, in Chinese adolescents, low GI diet results in greater reduction in body mass index and body fat percentage, enhanced insulin sensitivity and favorable changes of cardiometabolic risk factors compared to conventional diet after 12 months of intervention. This study is a randomized controlled trial of a low GI (<55) versus conventional Chinese diet (GI>/=70) in adolescents (12-month intervention followed by a 6-month observational period) to study; 1) the changes in body mass index and obesity associated changes in cardiometabolic profile; 2) the underlying hormonal factors associated with these changes.
