Community Partnering to Encourage Healthy Beverage Intake Through Child Care

Beverage consumption is an important determinant of young children's weight, yet few obesity prevention interventions focus comprehensively on encouraging healthy beverage consumption. This quasi-experimental study evaluated whether a childcare-based intervention, combining environmental changes, education/promotion, and policy supports to promote healthy beverage intake, improved at-home beverage consumption and weight status among children ages 2-5 years.

"6-10-14 for Health" is an integrated weight-loss intervention programme for obese children from Gdansk municipality. Both participants of the programme and their family members are offered a 12-month integrated intervention, including medical, dietetic and psychological counselling, as well as educational workshops for parents.

FAECAL MICROBIOTA TRANSPLANTATION IN OBESITY

40 patients meeting the criteria for obesity surgery are enrolled. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) will be administered in gastroscopy 6 months before obesity surgery. 20 of the patients will receive a fecal transplant of a thin donor and 20 will receive placebo - a transplant made of their on feces. Changes in weight, laboratory values, general well being and stool microbiota will be measured up to one year after the surgery; one and a half years after FMT. The hypothesis is that FMT and the change in gut microbiota will help to reduce and maintain lower weight.

Understanding the impact of the dietary intake of these fatty acids along with others (such as ARA) involved in inflammation is essential for prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases as it is obesity and its comorbidities. The role that the EPA and DHA play in the inflammatory processes can be understood by studying the capacity of certain immune cells and their genetic background to respond under the constant exposure to an adjusted diet in omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids in individuals with obesity.

This research project aims to investigate, in an innovative way, the molecular pathophysiology of gestational complications induced by maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). These complications have an immediate impact on obstetric outcomes - such as pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction - as well as long-term consequences for the health of the mother and child. This proposal aims to advance the understanding of the relationship between subclinical maternal and placental inflammation with dietary components through a prospective cohort of pregnant women. To this end, a prospective cohort of pregnant women will be conducted with four follow-up waves: 13th-20th (baseline), 24th-28th, 32nd-36th gestational weeks and at the time of delivery. Retrospective data referring to the first trimester of pregnancy will be obtained from the medical records. Pregnant women will be invited to participate in the study by registering at the prenatal service. Women who start prenatal care with less than 13 weeks of gestation will be registered, for capture in the 2nd consultation. The initial sample calculation is 120 volunteers. Maternal blood samples will be collected at 2 times: 2nd trimester appointment and 3rd trimester appointment. Placental and umbilical cord blood samples will be collected immediately after delivery. Dietary consumption during pregnancy will be assessed by 2 24-hour recalls at each visit (1 in person and 1 by telephone). The identification of functional biomarkers in maternal blood and placenta will serve for prognostic purposes of gestational complications such as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. The identification of dietary factors associated with obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus and associated complications will provide information that will serve as a basis for nutritional guidelines for pregnant women.

The Effect Evaluation of Laser Acupuncture in Obesity

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial is conducted. 200 subjects aged above 20 years with body mass index (BMI) more than 25 kg/m2 are randomly divided into 2 groups (Group 1 and Group 2). Group 1 receives laser acupuncture therapy first while Group 2 receives sham laser acupuncture therapy first. After 12 weeks of treatment and 14 days of washout, Group 1 switch to sham laser acupuncture therapy while Group 2 switch to laser acupuncture for 12 weeks. The subjects are treated with a gallium aluminum arsenide Handylaser Trion, which is used to apply at each of the acupuncture points for 10 seconds every time, 3 times per week. The measurements of outcomes are performed in the beginning, weekly during treatment, and monthly after treatment for 3 months.

The primary aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in muscle strength between women with lipedema and women with obesity. The secondary aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in physical fitness between women with lipedema and women with obesity.
