The Effect of GLP-1 Receptor Activation on Central Reward and Satiety in Obesity and Diabetes

Diabetes MellitusDiabetes Mellitus2 more

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) based therapies, such as exenatide, are already successfully employed in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Exenatide improves glycemic control and is associated with reduced food intake and body weight. The investigators hypothesize that it affects central reward and satiety circuits and that this may contribute to the weight loss.

Efficacy of a Web-based Tailored Weight Management Program

Obesity

The primary objective of this study is to assess the benefit of using online, tailored behavioral weight management materials (Balance), in combination with nutritional materials (Balance and Nourish), in conjunction with a goal setting tool (Balance and Achieve), or a combination of all three (Balance, Nourish and Achieve). This objective will be evaluated by measuring weight loss rates as reported by study participants at 3, 12, and 18 months post-enrollment. The hypothesis is that adding additional materials will increase the effect of the intervention over just using Balance alone.

The Role of the Omentum in the Treatment of Morbid Obesity

Obesity

The purpose of this research is to determine some of the reasons that blood sugar and insulin levels improve after bariatric surgery but before weight loss begins, as well as why people respond differently to weight loss surgery. It will also examine whether removing the fat around the stomach and large intestine (the omentum) will improve weight loss. Finally, it will see why there are differences between Whites and African Americans who have weight loss surgery.

Investigating the Use of Quercetin on Glucose Absorption in Obesity, and Obesity With Type 2 Diabetes...

ObesityDiabetes

Quercetin is a compound naturally found in various foods. It may have some role in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. The purpose of this study is to investigate research volunteers with obesity or obesity with type 2 diabetes to determine whether quercetin affects the way glucose is absorbed by the body. Thirty two participants aged 19 to 65 who are considered to be medically obese or obese with type 2 diabetes will be enrolled in this study. Before the onset of treatment, they will undergo a medical history, physical exam, blood work, and urinalysis. During the study, participants will be given an oral glucose tolerance test three times; during these tests they will receive 1 or 2 grams of quercetin, or placebo. Researchers will collect blood samples and analyze the effect of the treatment on blood glucose.

PALS-CATCH Intervention for Obesity Prevention Among At-risk Toddlers

Childhood Obesity

The purpose of this study is to learn whether a combination of two research-proven programs, a responsive caregiving parenting program and a childhood obesity prevention program, will have an effect on toddlers' healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Investigators hypothesize that the children participating in the intervention will have significantly lower BMI z-scores, lower intake of sugar sweetened beverages, and increased number of servings of fruits and vegetables, and minutes of physical activity.

Preoperative Inspiratory Muscle Training in Gastroplasty

Obesity

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of preoperative inspiratory muscle training in patients with grade III obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. It will be a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial with volunteers allocated in two groups that will be compared according to postoperative evolution (pulmonary complications, lung function, strength and endurance of the respiratory muscles and respiratory system resistance).

Mechanical Ventilation of Obese Patients During Oral Surgical Procedures

Obesity

The prevalence of obese patients in a great number of patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia has been on the increase. Recent studies suggest an intraoperative protective mechanical ventilation for the obese. Surgical procedures in the oral cavity increase the risk of perioperative complications of obese patients. By making this randomized clinical study, investigators want to determine whether the protective intraoperative ventilation with the use of higher positive end-expiratory pressure and recruitment maneuvers compared to ventilation with low positive end-expiratory pressure and without recruitments cause better postoperative respiratory function parameters of obese patients during oral surgical procedures. Investigators also aim to establish the fact which value of a positive end-expiratory pressure has a favorable impact on the respiratory function without negative hemodynamic effect.
