Obesity

The main aims of the work: Analysis of the concentration of selected pro-inflammatory parameters in blood serum and saliva of people with different distribution of subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue. Analysis of metabolic obesity biomarkers in saliva and blood serum. Evaluation of new diagnostic methods for the early determination of the risk of metabolic obesity and its complications. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria the observational study was conducted among 119 people (79 women and 41 men). Study group included 79 people (48 women and 31 men with obesity), and control group included 41 people (31 women and 10 men with normal body weight). The study consisted of three visits. The first included qualification for the study, body composition measurements, ankle-brachial index test and completing the questionnaires and 3-day nutrition diaries. At the second visit blood was collected to conduct the morphological test. At the third visit saliva was collected to determine the proinflammatory cytokine and adipokine concentration.

Weight Development in Children With Obesity After Declining Treatment

Childhood obesity is a major health concern and lifestyle intervention is recommended as the cornerstone in the weight loss treatment. However, only limited knowledge exists in relation to characterization and follow-up of children who decline participation in a lifestyle intervention. The aim of this study is to investigate the long-term development in BMI z-score for children with obesity who decline to participate in a lifestyle intervention. This study identified approximately 170 children with obesity who declined treatment in a community-based lifestyle intervention. The development in BMI z-score for these children will be compared to children enrolled in the lifestyle intervention (i.e. treatment) and children who were never invited. Data from different sources will be used to answer the research question (intervention registries, health check-ups at school and Danish registries).

The prevalence of maternal obesity is increasing rapidly worldwide and constitutes an important obstetric problem that increases mortality and morbidity in both mothers and infants. Obese women are prone to pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and children of obese mothers are more likely to develop cardiovascular and metabolic disease later in life. The risk of developing GDM in obese pregnants is 1.3-3.8 times higher than in pregnant women with a normal body mass index, and approximately 70% of women with GDM remain at risk of developing type 2 diabetes until 28 years postpartum. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects approximately 6% of pregnant women and its prevalence is increasing in parallel with the obesity epidemic. GDM is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including macrosomia, preterm delivery, neonatal hypoglycemia, neonatal jaundice, and congenital anomalies. It is also associated with a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus after birth. It is known that visceral adipose tissue increases in obese women. It is thought that there is a relationship between visceral adipose tissue increase and diabetes. In this study, the levels of new adipocytokines such as Visfatin, Vaspin and Omentin secreted from visceral adipose tissue in patients diagnosed with GDM will be measured.

This study is a retrospective review of participants who visited Department of Endocrinology, Guang'anmen Hospital and accepted traditional Chinese medicine formula for at least sis months, from January 2015 to December 2020. All the participants should be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and dyslipidemia. Therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine will be evaluated based on the changes of blood glucose, body mass index, blood lipids, and blood pressure.

Visceral Obesity

Visceral obesity is a major risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. In clinical settings and during research, "body mass index (BMI)" is usually used for assessing obesity, and when it is above 30 kg/m2, it is defined as obesity. However, the risk posed by obesity is more related to body fat distribution than total body fat, and BMI only reflects the second. Individuals with a BMI below 30, even 25, may still have visceral adiposity detectable via an abdominal computerized tomography ( CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Therefore new, practical, inexpensive parameters are needed to evaluate visceral adiposity. "Metabolic Score for Visceral Adiposity (METS-VF)", "Body Shape Index (BSI)", "Conicity Index (CI)" and "Body Roundness Index (BRI)" are a few recent indexes developed trying to fulfill these needs. The aim is to investigate the effectivity of METS-VF in comparison with BMI, BSI, CI, and BRI in reflecting visceral adiposity assessed with CT.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect maternal obesity and breastfeeding play on infant body composition. The investigators hypothesize in the first 6 months of life breast fed offspring from overweight / obese mothers will be fatter with greater trunk fat mass and accumulate fat at a greater rate than breast fed infants from normal weight mothers. Furthermore, the investigators postulate that circulating maternal milk adipocytokines will positively correlate to total fat mass at six months of age.
