Television Viewing (TVV) & Puberty on Lunchtime Food Intake

Obesity Prevention

The investigators hypothesize that television viewing will affect food intake in adolescent girls, and will depend on pubertal stage. Food intake will be measured at 30 min following a glucose(1 g of glucose/kg body weight) or sweetened noncaloric beverage with or without the presence of TV. Subjective appetite will be measured as well.

Microarray Analysis in Syndromic Obesity

Mental RetardationSyndromic Obesity

Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) array technology has been used in numerous studies on mental retardation, and few chromosomal abnormalities have been identified in patients. Because chromosomal abnormalities have still been associated with obesity, we can expect that syndromic obesity is also associated with small deletions/duplications. Characterization of deleted or duplicated loci in these obese patients would mean that these loci include genes implicated in obesity. This will permit to propose new gene(s) involved in obesity. (In french: Caractérisation phénotypique et recherche de REManiements chromosomiques chez des patients présentant une OBésité syndromique de cause non identifiée : REMOB)

Use of Flaxseed(Alpha Linolenic Acid) Powder in Morbidly Obese Patients With Systemic Inflammation...

Morbid ObesityAtherosclerosis1 more

Preliminary studies have shown that flaxseed powder, rich in the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid,is beneficial for the general inflammation present in morbidly obese subjects by decreasing elevated serum markers. As omega-3 fatty acids display additional properties including possible amelioration of atherosclerosis,a 3-month supplementation protocol was devised.Arterial stiffness and intima thickness will be measured in severely obese subjects, in order to document possible reduction of these variables as well.

Study of Impact of Behavioral Intervention- Exercise, Nutrition, Education- on Body Mass Index (BMI)...

Obesity

This study will evaluate the impact a behavioral intervention can have on BMI. The researchers anticipate the intervention group will experience a decrease in BMI of approximately five points. The intervention group will be compared to a control group. This is a long term, randomized, controlled study. The behavioral intervention is conducted during a four hour monthly session. The behavioral intervention includes: exercise, education on medical aspects and nutrition, and empowerment.

Workplace-Sponsored Program to Reduce Obesity

ObesityCardiovascular Diseases

The purpose of this study is to design a comprehensive nutrition and physical activity strategy to gain a broad understanding of the social and cultural role of food and physical activity among workers. Perspectives on innovative interventions that are socially feasible and culturally acceptable will also be obtained. Health lifestyle promotion interventions addressing portion control, healthy nutrition, and increasing physical activity will be tested.

The MODE Trial: Planned Caesarean Section Versus Induction of Labour for Women With Class III Obesity...

Obesity Complicating ChildbirthObesity4 more

Canadian guidelines recommend that women with a pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) at or above 40 kg/m2 deliver by their due date. When delivery is planned prior to spontaneous labour, there are two options: planned induction of labour or pre-labour Caesarean (C-section). However, it is not yet clear whether induction of labour or planned pre-labour C-section is the best option for this population. The MODE Trial aims to assess the feasibility of conducting a larger-scale trial of planned mode of delivery in first time mothers who have a BMI >=40kg/m2, and obtain preliminary data on health outcomes for moms and babies following delivery by either planned C-section or induction of labour.

Efficacy of Volume Ventilation in Patients With Acute Respiratory Failure at Risk of Obstructive...

Acute Respiratory FailureHypercapnic Respiratory Failure5 more

This study compares a volume targeted pressure support non-invasive ventilation with an automatic PEP regulation (AVAPS-AE mode) to a pressure support non-invasive ventilation (S/T mode) in patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure with acidosis. This study focuses on patients at risk of obstructive apneas or obesity-hypoventilation syndrom (BMI≥30 kg/m²). Half of participants (33 patients) will receive non invasive ventilation with AVAPS-AE mode, the other half will receive non-invasive ventilation with S/T mode.

Dairy Intervention in People With Obesity

Obesity

Obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, but weight reduction is difficult to achieve. In this randomized controlled trial we will include 120 obese subjects. Subjects will be allocated to one of the 3 diet types (minus 500 kcal / d): Yoghurt diet: 500 g low-fat yogurt / d, about 1000-1100 mg calcium / d, Milk product diet: 500 g of low-fat milk or buttermilk / d, about 1000-1100 mg calcium / d Standard diet: 500 g soy yogurt / d, about 500 mg calcium / d Primary endpoint is the change in fat mass (baseline vs. 12 weeks), secondary endpoints are metabolic and endocrine parameters, gut microbiome, quality of life, hunger and satiety.
