
Effect of a Drinkable Yogurt Enriched in Proteins and Fibers on Satiety
ObesityWorldwide, obesity rate has increased so much in the latest years, that we call it obesity epidemic. Overweight could result of an unbalanced energetic balance for years. The person who regularly consumes more calories than she expends will find herself with a positive energetic balance, which results in a weight gain. A daily overconsumption of only 10 calories comes with a weight gain throughout one year. A way to avoid this overconsumption is to eat food that increases satiety. Satiety can be defined as the time interval after food ingestion, during which hunger and desire to eat are suppressed. The general objective of the study is to investigate in a pilot study the impact of a drinkable yogurt enriched in proteins and fibres on satiety.

A Psychological and Behavioral Intervention for Post-Bariatric Patients
ObesityThe study is designed to test a pilot intervention for bariatric patients who are starting to regain weight after the 1st year post-surgery. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an empirically supported therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder, has also successfully been applied to patients with substance use and binge eating problems. The purpose of this study is to develop and test a group intervention based on DBT and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques for patients engaging in these maladaptive behaviors after surgery with co-occuring weight gain.

LA Sprouts: The Impact of Gardening and Nutrition Education on Childhood Obesity in Latino Youth...
Pediatric ObesityThe overall goal of this project is to conduct a randomized controlled 12-week after school, gardening, nutrition and cooking program (called "LA Sprouts") to improve dietary intake and reduce obesity in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students (ages 8-12 years) in Los Angeles. Approximately 400 3rd - 5th grade students participating in the LA's Best after school program will participate. Four elementary schools in Los Angeles will be selected to participate in the study. Schools will be randomized by region to either receive the intervention (LA Sprouts; 2 schools, n=200 students) or serve as controls (received a delayed intervention program one school semester later; 2 schools, n=200 students). The LA Sprouts intervention will take place at the elementary schools, with gardens on campus specially designed and built for this project. The program will be held once a week for 12 weeks and will consist of a 45-minute gardening lesson, taught by Master Gardeners from the University of California Cooperative Extension (supervised by Nicole Gatto, MPH, PhD), and a 45-minute nutrition education and cooking lesson, taught by USC a Nutrition Educator (supervised by Jaimie Davis, PhD, RD). Measures of childhood obesity (i.e., body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentages), blood pressure, metabolic function (fasting blood glucose, insulin and lipids), dietary intake and related behaviors, and school performance will be measured before and after the implementation of the program in both intervention and control participants. Approximately 10 additional students of the same age will be asked to participate in a focus group to evaluate the questionnaire developed for this study. In addition, approximately 20 additonal students of the same age will be asked to participate in a test-retest session to validate the reliability of the questionnaire.

ObesityThe overall objective of this pilot is to demonstrate the feasibility of a low-cost intervention targeting obesity prevention among children in a primary care setting. Specifically, the investigators aim to answer the following questions: Can the investigators recruit and retain patients using the methods proposed, and how easy or difficult will this process be? Can physicians deliver the proposed intervention messages in the time the investigators have proposed? Can the phone counselor reach participants and accomplish the goals outlined for these calls? Can the investigators obtain the data proposed and within the proposed time frame?

REACH-OUT: Chicago Children's Diabetes Prevention Program
ObesityType 2 DiabetesThe purpose of this research study is to evaluate two nutrition and exercise programs in children ages 9-12 who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This study also includes the involvement of parents or guardians who are willing to participate in these programs with the child.

ObesityThere are few studies that look at sustained weight loss in the adolescent population. This study uses a multidisciplinary approach along with pharmacotherapy (use of Meridia)to motivate and establish behavior changes in adolescents (12-18yo) during the first phase of the study. The second phase will have those who have lost at least 5% BMI to be randomized into one of two groups. This first group will have no intervention and will be followed at 3 and 6 months to assess for weight loss maintenance. The second group will continue on with monthly behavior modifications and also be evaluated at 3 and 6 months. The hypothesis proposed is that, 1)there will be sustained weight loss at the end of one year in both arms as compared to baseline BMI, 2) and the arm with the behavioral therapy intervention will be more successful than no intervention at weight loss maintenance.

Analysis of Functional Performance in Subjects With Obesity During Motor Tasks.
ObesityBackground. Individuals with obesity can present several functional limitations that can significantly impact on their quality of life. Furthermore, even during the execution of specific motor tasks, subjects with obesity can experience excessive biomechanical overload. It is therefore necessary to develop appropriate assessment protocols that are able to provide support for risk assessment, in consideration of different types of motor tasks, including movements that can reflect the main daily and / or work activities. In this perspective, it is essential to define a protocol that includes an integrated evaluation process based on objective and quantitative metrics, i.e., functional scales, clinical scores, etc. In this context, the quantitative analysis of movement is widely used in clinical practice and in research to investigate in an objective and comprehensive way on movement disorders in various pathological conditions, including obesity. Conventionally, kinematic and kinetic parameters of movement are measured in motion analysis laboratories, using optoelectronic systems based on passive markers, force platforms and electromyographic systems, which represent the gold standard. Although motion analysis is considered accurate, the availability of specific laboratories, high costs and dependence on trained users sometimes limit its use in clinical practice. A variety of wearable sensors available today has enabled researchers and clinicians to pursue applications where individuals are monitored in home and outpatient settings. Hypothesis and significance. The hypothesis is that wearables could reveal a good agreement, accuracy, and correlation between the parameters measured by means of optoelectronic system and those measured by wearables in individuals with obesity. Specific Aims. The main objective is the implementation of an integrated protocol for the clinical evaluation of subjects with obesity through the analysis of the execution of different motor tasks typical of daily life and work. Appropriately identified clinical scores and scales will also be supported by quantitative evaluations carried out with human movement analysis systems (optoelectronic systems based on markers and inertial measurement units).

The Irisin and Metabolic Exercise Training Study
ObesityIt has been established that greater amounts of vigorous intensity physical activity lead to improved health outcomes. Interestingly, the response of biologically active substances, called myokines, differs according to exercise intensity. As such, the current study aims to compare the difference in the response to irisin according to different exercise intensities in both normal weight subjects and individuals living with obesity. This study will compare continuous moderate intensity physical activity to high intensity physical activity against a control condition. Furthermore, this study will determine whether differences in exercise intensity are associated with better insulin sensitivity.

Weight Loss Diet in Obesity With Metabolic Syndrome
ObesityDiet ModificationConcomitant interventions included lifestyle modification with a personally tailored program of diet as detailed below and physical activity adjusted for age and specific physical limitations, targeting engagement in physical activity of at least 150 minutes/week. Lipid lowering and or blood pressure lowering drugs were prescribed as needed according to guideline-assisted medical practice. Patients were seen by a physician every 3 month. The dietitian had a weekly meeting with the patients for the first three months, every other week during months 4-6, once a month during month 7-9 and every 6 weeks during the last three months of the study.
