Weight Loss Effects on Heart and Blood Vessel Function in Obesity

Obesity

Obesity is a growing epidemic and is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The investigators know that obesity leads to abnormalities in how the blood vessels and the heart function and that these abnormalities are an important cause of this increased risk in obese individuals. While improvements in these abnormalities have been reported with marked weight reduction (eg surgery) and lifestyle changes including exercise training, it is not clear that these abnormalities can be substantially reversed with standard dietary interventions. Additional information is needed regarding the degree of weight loss required, the time course of these improvements, nor the mechanisms. All of these have major implications for the potential role of weight loss in the management of these patients. The investigators will assess the effects of dietary induced weight loss in both the short and long term on the function of blood vessels and the heart, and the relationship of any changes with markers of inflammation that are present in obesity. By understanding the factors that are important in reversing these abnormalities in obesity the investigators will be better to identify and reduce heart attack and stroke in obese individuals in the future.

Translational Study for Obesity Management in Mexican Adults Using the "Group Lifestyle Balance...

Obesity is the main modifiable risk factor for the development of chronic diseases in Mexico. Several randomized controlled trials have shown that intensive lifestyle programs are efficacious for the management of obesity. These programs include frequent sessions (14 or more contacts in the first 6 months) focused on diet and physical activity and use a behavior change protocol. In Mexico most primary care clinics and public hospitals apply traditional treatments for obesity management, which have limited effect on weight loss. This study would provide scientific evidence for an effective model for obesity management. Objective. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the "Group Lifestyle Balance Program" for overweight and obesity management in adults, in primary care clinics and public hospitals from Sonora. This is a translational clinical study. Healthcare providers from the participating clinics will be trained with the Group Lifestyle Balance Program before its implementation. The primary outcome measurement is the change in body weight from baseline to 6 months and 12 months. Changes in body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, depression, quality of life and stress scales will be measured in patients receiving the program before and 6 and 12 months after starting the program. Additionally, biochemical parameters (fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment- Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and liver enzymes [Aspartate transaminase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)] will be evaluated from baseline to 12 months.

Ginger Capsules for the Chronic Treatment of Obesity

Regarding its complex pathogenesis and clinic-epidemiological meaning, different strategies are needed for the treatment of obesity. Ginger is the rhizome of a plant with thermogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, and may be a promising alternative as add-on strategy in the treatment for obesity. The primary objective of the current study is to assess whether consumption of ginger as an add-on strategy to restrictive diet is effective to reduce fat body percentage, increase basal metabolic rate and improve loss weight. The secondary objectives are: to assess the effect of nutritional intervention in quality of diet and weight loss. to evaluate the effect of ginger on behavioral symptoms and peripheral biomarkers in overweight subjects.
